Solution
The Dubious Case of the Guilty Detective
THE EXPLANATION
Chief Inspector Bungler had arranged a night of poker playing with his long term friend Frank Gregory. However during a break for a cigar outside, Gregory was shot dead with Bungler's own gun.
Insisting that he is innocent the Inspector asked you to try and clear his name. Did you manage it?
With Inspector Bungler behind bars the case file is empty. However he did have time to note down a telephone number at the bottom of the page.
Head to the phone box and you will see that it has been vandalized and is out of order.
Looking around the telephone box you will find a scrap of newspaper on the floor which contains an article about the decline of the town by a member of Bloodborough AFS.
AFS stands for Amature Film Society and 'Bloodborough Amateur Film Society meet and the community center.
Follow the link from the community center to the film society 'YouTube' page where you will find an email address to contact the writer of the article.
Email the address and you receive the following response.
"Hello,
Thank you for your email.
I am glad to see that I am not the only one in this town who is concerned with the increase of vandalism lately.
The police really should do something about it.
In the mean time you can use the secret temporary telephone that we have installed in the town for trustworthy residents to use.
It's located on the green near the bank and the college.
Click the number of Oscars that "Gone With The Wind" picked up.
As a film buff that should be easy for you.
Kind Regards
Ken Stilton
Bloodborough AFS"
Google will tell yout that 'Gone with the Wind' won 8 Oscars, so go to the patch of grass near the bank and the college and click 8 times to find the temporary telephone.
Dial the number found in the case file and you will hear a message that Inspector Bungler has recorded for you, which goes as follows:
My friend Frank Gregory has just been murdered and it’s not looking good for me. He was at my house tonight for one of our regular poker nights, he was a good friend I would never have harmed him.
After a few hours he went out into the back garden for a cigar when I heard a terrible bang. I rushed outside and found that he had been shot dead, with my own gun! The murderer must have dropped it as he made his getaway. My finger prints are all over it obviously.
I think a neighbour has called the police because they’re here already. Knowing them, they will get the wrong idea and think I did it. Please help me! If you need it my address is 54A ….”
Unfortunatelty the message runs out before you can hear his full address.

Go to the police station where Inspector Bungler is being held. You have to enter his full name and address to see him.
His first name can be found from the Restaurant website where he won a raffle to win a free meal. The name of the street that he lives on can be found on the School website. It is Milk Street, one of the streets mentioned in connection with the road safety campaign.
Enter Inspector Bunglers details to speak to him and during the conversation you discover a few facts:
1. Greg Jones, a bank robber who Inspector Bungler jailed has recently been released.
2. Greg Jones is a reformed character now and plays in a Christian rock band.3.The murdered man's wife is called Helen and Bungler was close friends with them both.
4. The murder weapon (Bungler's own gun) was taken from his car, but the vehicle wasn't broken into.
Go to Lether Apron pub and you will see that a Christian rock band were booked to play there. The website says that to contact a member of the band you must email their name followed by '@murderhunt.co.uk'.
Send an email to gregjones@murderhunt.co.uk
You receive the following response..
"Hello,
Thank you for your email.
It is true that I was a scally in my youth and it was Inspector Bungler who put me behind bars - but I thank him for it. He put me on the path to righteousness. If it wasn’t for him I would still be a lost soul.
I was with the vicar on the night of the murder discussing religious matters.
Ask here if you don’t believe me. Here’s her personal email -
'coolvic@murderhunt.co.uk'.
Many Thanks
Greg Jones
Another email to the vicar will get you this response..
"Hello,
You must be investigating the tragic murder of Frank Gregory.
Well I can confirm that Greg Jones was with me on the night of the murder. We were at the vicarage discussing religious matters. He is a reformed man now, I’m certain.
I must go now. I am visiting the murdered man's wife. She must be in need of my help during this difficult time. I can’t believe she is still at work. I suppose being a loan officer it is difficult to take time off due to the credit crunch.
Peace be with you,
Esther Parkinson
Vicar"
Go to the bank website. You now know the murdered man's wife's full name and job title so enter them to speak to her.
Helen Gregory, Loan Officer
During the conversation she gives you a box that she found which belonged to her dead husband. The box needs a code to open it.
Take the test on the college website about the town and when you answer the 10 questions correctly you will see the following message:
"Well done, you have answered 10 questions about Bloodborough correctly. You are clearly a local resident like me.
I bet that you are sick of the feline population of this town running wild too. The other day I saw one running around on the railway bridge without a care in the world. That could easily have caused a serious accident. Someone really should click and hold for an exact number of seconds to find it. Possibly the number of buildings in Bloodborough. What is the point though, they will be running wild again before we know it.
Thank You"
There are 31 buildings in Bloodborough, 32 if you include the telephone box.
Click and hold the railway bridge for between 31 or 32 seconds and you will find Fluffball the cat.
The cat is wearing a collar with www.murderhunt.co.uk/h/z7y.htm written on it.
Type in this domain to find the Fortune Teller’s website.
Look into here crystal ball and she says:
"I see a code that can only be broken by entering my domain in reverse."
Reverse the last bit of the domain on Fluufball’s collar (without the htm extension) to get the following domain..
www.murderhunt.co.uk/y7z/h.htm
Enter that domain and you see an old piece of paper with a lot of symbols on it.
Some of the symbols are on the front of the locked box.
If you enter the symbols shown on the box in the order that they appear on the paper nothing will happen, however of you do it backwards you will unlock the box.
The clue to doing this is found on the Fox Inn’s facebook page where some Bloodborough inhabitants have been discussing the murdered man. One states that he always liked to do things backwards.
Open the box and all becomes clear.
There is a newspaper cutting in which Inspector Bungler has been hailed as a hero, but Frank has written the word traitor on it.
Clearly their friendship wasn’t as close as it seemed.
There are also two letters, one from Bungler. One to Frank and one to his wife Helen which shows that they once had an affair.
Frank has never forgiven the Inspector for it.
Finally there is a picture of Helen ripped up and on the back Frank has written: "Jezebel, you’ll be sorry when I’m gone."
So Frank was having suicidal thoughts and he killed himself to frame Inspector Bungler. He never forgave bungler for having an affair with his wife years ago.
Murderer : Frank Gregory (Suicide)
Motive: Revenge for affair
The winner, selected at random from all of the correct entries is:
Mr. R. Banner, Merseyside
